August was the joint hottest month ever recorded on earth, according to the European climate service Copernicus.
Last month temperatures around the whole globe averaged 16.96 degrees Celsius.
In 2015 the Paris Climate agreement set a target of keeping the world to an average of one and a half degrees above pre-industrial temperatures to avoid the worst effects of climate change, but last month we far exceeded that - rising to 1.65 degrees above that level.
