Hammer-ons and pull-offs are one of the first techniques that make your playing feel like real guitar. The concept is simple: a hammer-on is dropping a finger down hard enough to sound a note without picking, and a pull-off is the reverse, plucking the string with the finger you're lifting off. Put them together and you've got a fluid, connected sound that shows up everywhere. "Wish You Were Here," "Sweet Home Alabama," "Over the Hills and Far Away" all use combinations of these. Master the basic motion and a huge chunk of the guitar repertoire opens right up.
