John Mayer has talked about something called the Equator, and it's becoming one of those concepts that keeps popping up in guitar circles. The idea is that your root note on the fretboard acts as a dividing line, and above and below that line you've got access to different sounds and licks. Minor pentatonic above, major pentatonic below, and mixing the two is where things get really interesting. It's a great way to stop thinking in boxes and start thinking in zones.
