Prime Minister Keir Starmer will not have to endure a Commons inquiry into whether he misled MPs over how he appointed Peter Mandelson as US ambassador.

The vote on whether to refer him like his ill-fated predecessor Boris Johnson to the parliamentary standards committee was squashed by a Labour majority whipped into shape.
MPs who should have been campaigning ahead of next week's tough elections were summoned to Westminster to hold their nose and save the prime minister.
Earlier in the day, Keir Starmer's former chief of staff and right-hand man Morgan McSweeney told the Foreign Affairs Committee that he had "got it wrong" when he advised the prime minister to appoint Mandelson as ambassador.
