The Russian president visited the island of Iturup, also known as Etorofu, which is part of the Kuril islands. In the final days of World War II, the Soviet Union seized it from Japan - resulting in a dispute that has lasted decades.
Russia still controls the territory but Japan’s prime minister says the Northern Territories, as they call them, are “an inherent part of Japan's territory”.
