Rhythm guitar is the foundation of everything, and getting better at it will do more for your playing than practicing scales ever will. A simple exercise I use with students is to put on a favorite song, mute the strings with your fretting hand, and just focus entirely on matching the rhythm you hear with your strumming hand. No chord shapes to worry about, just pure feel and timing.
From there you can get more intentional about it. Find the one two three four, start with just downstrokes on each beat, then add the upbeats, then the subdivisions. Accent the two and four and suddenly you're locking into a groove. Isolate just the "and of four" and you're basically playing reggae.
Better rhythm makes everything else on the guitar sound more musical. These exercises are worth your time.
