Two voicings of the same chord played back to back is one of the quickest ways to add movement and texture to a static blues groove. I'm using an E7 here, starting with the C7 shape moved up to the 7th fret, then pairing it with a second voicing that bars across the 9th fret with a 10th fret high E on top.
Both voicings are hitting the same chord tones, but they have a completely different feel and weight. Alternating between them creates this natural push and pull that makes a chord vamp sound like it's going somewhere even when it's just sitting on one chord.
The whole idea moves right up to A7 using the same shapes, so once you've got the pair locked in for E7 you've basically got it for the whole blues progression. Try it out!
