In the ruins of Segóbriga, a haunting question lingers. Why would Rome raise a splendid city in the middle of empty land. The answer lies in a forgotten mineral that once powered prosperity, lapis specularis, pure gypsum crystals prized for their transparency and cleaved into thin sheets for Roman windows, partitions, and early greenhouses, before flat glass abruptly changed everything and left the city to fade.
Following that lost trail, the film moves from Spain’s rediscovered mines to the Great Geode of Pulpí, where ice clear crystals line an egg shaped cavity, and then across the Atlantic to Naica, where a sealed underground chamber reveals colossal gypsum giants in extreme heat and humidity. Through simple experiments, field observations, and clues trapped inside the crystals themselves, the story explores how slow cooling and mineral order can build breathtaking structures over immense time, and why protecting these unrepeatable natural treasures may matter as much as preserving humanity’s greatest monuments.
