How to stop flinching and keep your eyes open in boxing sparring, with 3 drills you can use in your next training session. Tony Jeffries, Olympic medalist boxer, breaks down exactly why it happens and what to do about it. Flinching and closing your eyes is completely normal and it doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. It comes down to experience and knowing what to expect when a punch is coming at you.
If you're sparring with someone who is hitting you hard every single time, that's not normal and it's not helping you. As a beginner your sparring should always be light and controlled. If your coach is letting that happen, Tony says consider changing gyms.
3 Drills to Stop Flinching and Keep Your Eyes Open:
Drill 1: The Fear Drill - partner stands in front of you with hands down and throws punches as close to your face as possible without hitting you, getting faster and faster. Gets you used to something coming at your face at speed without the fear of actually being hit
Drill 2: The Slip Drill - partner throws a 1-2 at your head at around 60% speed, you slip left on the jab and slip right on the cross. Trains you to read punches coming straight at your head
Drill 3: Shoulder and Body Sparring - Tony's favorite drill since he retired, everything you'd do in head sparring but you only hit shoulders and body. You're reading real punches at full speed without the head contact. Important: keep your guard up the same way you would in real sparring or you'll build bad habits
