Inside boxing and close range fighting is where real fight control happens, and in this video Olympic medalist Tony Jeffries breaks down 4 inside fighting combos that are practical boxing techniques for close range. You will learn how to fight on the inside effectively using proven combinations, no light “pitter patter” drills here. Each combo emphasizes essential boxing skills like head movement, smart positioning, devastating body shots while punching in close quarters. They are realistic techniques that work on the heavy bag, in sparring, and in real fights.

Combo 1 uses head movement to get inside safely and set up a high low attack. Start with a quick one two (jab cross), then slips twice while moving forward to dodge incoming punches and close the distance. This aggressive footwork and head movement makes you harder to get hit and puts you in perfect position to strike. From there, you throw a left hook and a short right hand up top, then digs a powerful left hook to the body. This combination is effective because slipping into range keeps you protected, and the quick high to low sequence (head punches followed by a body shot) catches the opponent off guard as their hands come up to protect the head.
Combo 2 focuses on positioning and counter punching inside. After throwing a one two up top, You roll under a counter hook and steps to the side, creating a new angle against your opponent. From that inside angle, you can immediately counter with a right hand to the head and a left hook to the body. This clever angle change uses defensive head movement (the roll) to make the opponent miss, while also opening them up for your counter. By coming back with a head shot then a body shot, you capitalize on the moment their guard is out of position. Tony even demonstrates an advanced variation where he throws a body hook while slipping inside, using that momentum to add power and further disrupt his opponent’s defense.
Combo 3 is all about relentless body attack to set up a big finish. Tony shows how throwing multiple body shots in boxing can break an opponent’s guard down. He rips a series of rapid shots to the midsection (for example, four quick punches to the body) to force the opponent to drop their elbows and defend low. The moment their hands drift down, he immediately switches upstairs with a left hook to the head. This classic strategy of “go to the body to open the head” is a game changer for close range fighting. It often works because few fighters can resist lowering their guard when under heavy body fire. You have to commit and be fast with this combo, but if executed with speed and confidence, it will work every time and can lead to a knockout.
Combo 4 shows a crafty way to land a devastating body shot by using an uppercut first. While fighting in the pocket, He pops a short uppercut up the middle to lift his opponent’s guard or chin. Even if the uppercut just grazes or makes them cover up, it serves its purpose. Their hands come up and their midsection opens. In that split second, He drops a crushing left hook to the body, one of Tony's favorite punches. By quickly mixing levels (head then body) with this inside combo, you catch your opponent by surprise and maximize the damage. This technique is a proven method to land a fight ending body shot at close range and it highlights the value of punching in close range with smart setups.
