Tony’s number one tip is straightforward: avoid head sparring if you don’t need it. For anyone training for fitness, self-defense, or general skill, he never recommends sparring to the head. You can build elite-level technique, timing, and ring IQ without taking head shots at all. Instead, Tony recommends safer alternatives like shoulder and body sparring. These drills still give you real boxing reactions. Punches come at you, you stay switched on, and you learn to read and defend attacks without getting hit in the head. Tony has relied on body and shoulder sparring for years and loves it. You will still build conditioning, sharpen reflexes, and improve timing, all while massively reducing brain trauma risk.
For aspiring fighters who need tougher work, Tony’s advice is to keep hard sparring limited and controlled. Save those sessions for specific days rather than making every sparring round a war. Even professionals don’t need constant heavy exchanges. Most of your rounds should be technical or light sparring with fast movement and light contact under a coach who knows what they’re watching.
