Key Southpaw Boxing Tips Covered:
Move Left, Away From Their Power - Always circle to your left side, which takes you away from the southpaw’s dangerous left hand. By moving left, you force them to adjust while bringing yourself closer to the opening for your right hand. This simple adjustment keeps you safer and makes it harder for them to land their best punch.
Lead Foot Outside - Winning the lead foot battle is critical in orthodox vs southpaw matchups. Place your lead foot outside of theirs to angle your body away from their straight left and line up your own right cross. This small adjustment makes your attacks cleaner and reduces the risk of getting caught.
Straight Right Hand - The straight right is the number-one punch against a left-handed boxer. Once your foot is outside theirs, throw it directly down the middle. It lands with power, is difficult for them to see, and often becomes your highest scoring shot against a southpaw opponent.
Left Hook Follow-Up - The left hook works perfectly after the right hand. If the southpaw tries to move away from your cross, they often walk right into the hook. You can also use the left hook first to draw their guard, then drop the right hand down the middle for maximum effect.
Control the Lead Hand - Southpaw fighters rely heavily on their lead hand to set up shots. Use your own lead to parry, tap, or control theirs. By winning this hand battle, you stop them from jabbing freely and create clear openings for your right hand or left hook.
Use Feints to Create Openings - Feint with your jab, shoulders, or head movement to freeze the southpaw and disrupt their rhythm. Good feints make them second-guess and give you the split-second timing to land your best punches.
Right Hand to the Body - The body is often exposed in the southpaw stance. Rip the right hook or uppercut to the body to wear them down and lower their guard. Body shots also slow their footwork and make them more vulnerable later in the fight.
Tony’s Go-To Combination - One of Tony’s most effective combinations against southpaws is the lead left hook followed by the straight right hand. The hook draws their attention or forces them to move, and the right hand lands with full power. This simple two-punch combo has worked for Tony in fights and is a reliable weapon against left-handed opponents.
These southpaw boxing tips will help you feel more confident in orthodox vs southpaw matchups. By controlling distance, keeping your lead foot outside, and using the right punches at the right time, you can beat a southpaw fighter with smart strategy instead of guesswork.
