Why Pipelines Cannot Replace the Strait of Hormuz
Saudi Arabia and the UAE have pipelines that can move some oil around the Strait, but their combined capacity is far below the volume normally carried through Hormuz. Iran, Iraq, and Kuwait have no comparable pipeline alternative for all of their exports.
New pipelines cost billions, take years to build, and can create political complications across multiple countries. Ships are more flexible because they can be rerouted, but that flexibility disappears when the choke point they depend on is closed.
