The Liquid Plug Protecting Giant Tanker Ships
Tanker vessels rely on specialized emergency pressure relief systems, primarily consisting of liquid plug PV breakers and high-velocity PV valves. PV breakers utilize a simple water displacement column on inert gas lines, allowing rising pressure to push the liquid down until excess gas vents safely into the atmosphere.
While liquid breakers effectively safeguard inert gas piping, they cannot be deployed directly on toxic cargo tanks due to the danger of dangerous vapors settling on deck. Instead, tankers utilize high-velocity PV valves, which harness pressure differentials to blast hazardous chemical fumes high above the ship's superstructure.
