The Bizarre Submarine-Ship Built to Defy Waves
Conventional hull designs experience substantial dynamic stress and instability due to continuous wave forces acting directly along the ocean surface waterline. To overcome this limitation, naval architects designed alternative hull shapes that reduce the waterplane area, minimizing the surface profile exposed to open ocean disruptions.
This engineering concept led to the creation of the Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull, or SWATH, configuration. By positioning the primary buoyant volume deep underwater within twin submarine-shaped structures, the vessel effectively isolates itself from surface waves, allowing energy to pass cleanly overhead.
