The Trade-Off Behind Titanic’s Propeller Mystery
The Olympic’s propeller changes make more sense once the trade-offs are clear. Replacing its four-bladed centre propeller with a three-bladed version may have improved efficiency and allowed higher RPM, giving it a slightly higher top speed.
But the change may also have increased vibration at the stern and reduced low-speed pulling power. That likely explains why Olympic’s experimental three-bladed propeller was later replaced with a four-bladed one.
