Why Boxy Ships Turn Easily but Can't Go Straight
Vessels with high block coefficients feature underwater hulls that closely resemble rectangular cuboids, maximizing internal volumetric capacity for bulk cargo and vehicles. However, this full-bodied geometry creates substantial hydrodynamic resistance, making the vessel highly sensitive to minor rudder inputs and prone to continuous course deviations.
As a result, high block coefficient ships require active steering corrections to hold a steady heading, making them far easier to maneuver in restricted ports and locks but much harder to keep on a straight line across open waters.
