Why Naval Architects Had to Invent the Outrigger AMAS
To address the distinct operational compromises of catamarans and SWATH ships, naval architects experimented with a three-hulled design featuring a dominant central hull flanked by two small outriggers called amas. This structural transition was designed to overcome the fundamental physics constraints where traditional monohulls face a severe design conflict.
Every standard single-hull vessel must balance a rigid tradeoff between a narrow width for maximum speed and a wide profile for stability. A wider hull inherently increases the lateral distance between the ship's center of buoyancy and center of gravity, which creates a larger, more powerful righting moment to resist tilting whenever the vessel heels.
