Four Ways a Supertanker Can Be Threatened
Iran uses asymmetric tactics to exploit the weaknesses of larger naval forces. Fast attack boats can swarm a supertanker, anti-ship missiles can be launched from shore or mobile platforms, and the Strait’s shallow water makes mine deployment easier.
A VLCC is around 300 metres long and cannot manoeuvre or accelerate like a small vessel. Drones can also monitor ships or carry explosives, adding another threat to tankers using this narrow passage.
