Why Oil Tankers Are Vulnerable in Hormuz
The Strait uses a traffic-separation scheme, much like a highway system for ships. Narrow inbound and outbound lanes, divided by a separation zone, keep fully loaded tankers organised and reduce the risk of collision.
That routing also makes ships predictable. Very Large Crude Carriers are enormous, slow to manoeuvre, and unarmed, so damage to one can become both an environmental and economic disaster.
