
Why a Steeper Propeller Isn’t Always Faster
A propeller can be understood as a shortened Archimedes screw. Its blade angle determines how far it moves water during each rotation: a steeper angle can move water farther and, in theory, make the ship go faster.
But a steeper angle also creates stronger vortices, wasting energy. If the angle is too steep, water is flung outward instead of efficiently pushed backward, so propeller design becomes a balance between thrust and energy loss.
