The Limits of Ballast Water Treatment Systems
Ultrasonic treatment uses sound energy to damage the cell walls of organisms, but it usually needs to work alongside filtration or another treatment method. No treatment system is universal because each has its own advantages and limitations.
All systems aim to reduce viable organisms to the limits set by the D2 standard. They lower the environmental risk, but they do not guarantee that every organism is removed from ballast water.
