The D1 Ballast Water Exchange Standard
The Ballast Water Management Convention requires ships to control the water they discharge. Under the D1 standard, ships exchange ballast water far offshore, generally more than 200 miles from land and in deep water.
This reduces the chance that coastal organisms will be carried from one port to another. Ships still need enough ballast to remain stable at sea, so the exchange has to be managed carefully.
