More Blades, More Power..., But There’s a Catch
More blades put more leading edges in contact with water, allowing a propeller to transfer energy through more water particles. That means it can turn more slowly while producing the same thrust as a propeller with fewer blades turning faster.
Lower RPM reduces machinery wear, cavitation risk, and ship vibration. But blades placed closer together disturb the water for the blades behind them, lowering efficiency and reducing the maximum speed possible from a given engine power.
