Why Crew Intentionally Tilted a Burning Cruise Ship
Firefighting teams equipped with breathing apparatus crawled through zero-visibility, smoke-choked corridors to search every cabin while hose parties launched water directly onto affected exterior balconies. Over a dozen high-pressure hoses rained down hundreds of tons of seawater onto the raging inferno within thirty minutes of the initial alarm.
To prevent the immense accumulation of firefighting water from destabilizing the vessel and causing a catastrophic capsize, officers intentionally applied a port list. This strategic tilt allowed hundreds of tons of excess water to safely drain directly overboard into the sea, enabling crews to extinguish the entire blaze by 4:36 AM.
