If It's So Powerful, Why Don’t Cargo Ships Use It?
Nuclear propulsion gives a ship extraordinary endurance with only a small amount of fuel. Militaries use it successfully in submarines and aircraft carriers, but merchant shipping operates under very different economic conditions.
A cargo ship has to work in normal markets with access to ports, insurance, financing, maintenance, and resale options. Nuclear vessels work best where an entire system has already been built around them, as with Russian civilian icebreakers.
