Why Don’t All Ship Propellers Look the Same?
Ships can have propellers with three, four, five, or even six blades. Olympic famously used a four-bladed centre propeller with three-bladed propellers on either side, while Titanic’s centre propeller remains a mystery.
Titanic’s plans list three blades, but Olympic switched between three and four during refits. With no photographs or recovered centre propeller, the best explanation may be that Harland and Wolff were testing what worked best.
