Who Actually Controls the Strait?
Territorial waters extend 12 nautical miles from a country’s coastline. Iran controls the northern side of the Strait while Oman controls the south, and the main shipping lanes stay on the Omani side whenever possible.
That keeps vessels outside Iranian territorial waters, but not outside Iranian reach. Bases on Abu Musa and the Tunb Islands give Iran visibility over traffic, while tankers can still pass within range of missiles, boats, and drones.
