A Flat Bottom Can Make a Ship More Stable
A modern cargo ship uses the same principle as the outrigger, but with hull shape instead of a separate side float. When a wide hull heels slightly, the underwater shape changes and shifts buoyancy toward the lower side.
A wider, shallower hull produces a stronger righting effect because its metacentre sits higher. As long as the centre of gravity stays below that point, the ship has enough form stability to remain upright.
