How Can a Pile of Rock Sink a Ship?
In 2015, the bulk carrier Bulk Jupiter capsized during the remnants of a tropical storm. Its cargo, bauxite, may have liquefied, although the exact cause was never confirmed.
Normally, vibration makes a bulk cargo settle more tightly in the hold. That lowers its centre of gravity and can actually make the ship more stable. The danger begins when moisture is trapped inside the cargo.
