The Origin of the Kort Nozzle
At zero speed, when a tug is working hardest, the nozzle can provide a substantial share of total thrust. In heavily loaded bollard-pull conditions, its contribution can approach half of the thrust produced by the whole unit.
The idea came from German engineer Ludwig Kort in 1934. He was trying to reduce canal-bank erosion caused by propeller wash, and discovered that the nozzle could make tugboats pull much harder.
