The Dangerous Problem With Pulling a Barge
For most of maritime history, a tug pulled its load on a long towline. It works, but the barge can yaw from side to side, drift in crosswinds, and create extra drag through the water.
The towline itself is also dangerous. Under heavy load it stores enormous energy, and a parted wire can snap back with lethal force.
