Why Tugboats Put a Wall Around Their Propellers
The duct sits close to the blade tips and blocks much of the water trying to spill around them. That weakens the tip vortices and reduces energy lost to rotational flow.
It also guides and accelerates water into the propeller, so more of the engine’s available power becomes useful thrust.
