A Barge Snapped in Half While Leaving Harbour
In 1972, the rigid ITB Martha R. Ingram cracked across its deck and both hull sides while departing a calm harbour. The cause was not the coupling, but a barge structure unable to withstand brittle fracture and uneven loading.
That failure revealed the problem with a fully rigid unit: loads pass through everything. The articulated ATB solved this by allowing one controlled axis of movement.
