How a Notch Barge Is Secured to a Tug
A notch guides the tug into position, but it cannot keep the vessels together by itself. The earliest systems used heavy face wires running from the tug’s bow to fittings on the barge.
The notch absorbed sideways forces, while the wires held the connection fore and aft. It was better than a towline, but the wires remained the weak point.
