The Flood Helps Keep This Door Shut
The direction a watertight door opens can be part of its safety system. If flooding builds on one side, water pressure can push the door harder against its frame instead of forcing it open.
That means the rising water helps improve the seal. It can also leave a possible escape route for someone trapped in the compartment behind the door.
