A Giant Ship Is Held Still by Geometry
A ship does not rely on one line alone. Different mooring lines control different movements: head and stern lines help hold it along the berth, breast lines keep it close to the quay, and spring lines resist forward and backward movement.
As vessels get larger, the arrangement becomes more complex. The goal is to spread the load across several lines while keeping the ship safely positioned against the dock.
