The Steel Lock That Lets a Tug Ride the Waves
An articulated tug and barge, an ATB, replaces face wires with a mechanical coupler. Powerful rams on the tug engage toothed racks inside the notch, locking the tug into the barge.
But the connection deliberately allows one movement: pitch. The tug can move up and down with waves, while roll, yaw, and sliding are held fast.
