When Two Vessels Become One Ship
Lock the tug and barge rigidly in every direction and you get an integrated tug and barge, or ITB. Regulators can certify the pair as a single vessel: the tug becomes the engine room, and the barge becomes the cargo hold.
The concept dates to 1950, when the tug Carport and barge G1 operated as one unit through the Great Lakes and New York State Barge Canal.
