Why ATBs Are So Flexible
A tug can uncouple from one barge and connect to another, allowing the same crewed power unit to move different cargoes. ATBs carry petroleum, chemicals, dry bulk, and even roll-on/roll-off cargo.
They are especially common on US coasts and the Great Lakes, including shallow Alaska routes and demanding Arctic operations.
