Why Propeller Tip Vortices Waste Energy

Tip vortices are similar to the little spirals that trail behind a spoon moving through tea. Each turn of the propeller sends energy into that rotating flow instead of useful thrust.
The more heavily a propeller is loaded, the stronger those vortices become, and the stronger the low-pressure region ahead of the blades becomes too.
