How Ships Support a Propeller Shaft
An oil header tank high in the engine room uses gravity to create pressure inside the seal chambers. The pressure remains slightly higher than surrounding seawater, so a seal failure should leak oil outward instead of admitting water into the ship.
Beyond the aft seals, the shaft enters the aft bearing, which supports both shaft and propeller loads. The bearing is shrink-fitted into place after being cooled with liquid nitrogen, creating a permanent friction lock.
