The Tiny Spring Protecting a Huge Ship
Stern-tube seals are stacked V-shaped elastomer rings designed for constant friction and heat. Seawater pressure pushes each seal lip more tightly against the rotating shaft, while a stainless-steel garter spring keeps it snug during vibration.
For the seals to work correctly, the spaces between them must be filled with oil. That oil is not simply pumped in manually, it relies on basic physics.
