How Navigator’s Balls Correct Induced Magnetism
Soft iron produces a changing magnetic field, so permanent magnets cannot correct it. Its effect is strongest on intercardinal headings, where the ship’s magnetic forces can deflect the compass needle.
The two spheres beside the compass are Kelvin’s balls, also called navigator’s balls. They take on induced magnetism that weakens the unwanted athwartship magnetic force, helping remove deviation and allowing the needle to rotate smoothly through all 360 degrees.
