Why Ships Lean and Stay Leaning
A list is a permanent lean to port or starboard that remains even in calm water. It is usually caused by uneven cargo, ballast, fuel, shifting bulk cargo, or flooding on one side.
The ship leans toward the heavier side, but a list is not automatically a sign that the vessel is sinking. Its danger depends on how severe the imbalance is and how much stability remains.
