Why a Leaning Ship Can Throw Off Its Compass
A ship can also have a vertical permanent magnetic field, particularly when it was built in the Northern Hemisphere. Normally it has little effect because the compass rotates horizontally.
When the ship heels over, however, that vertical field can deflect the needle. This heeling error is corrected with a magnet in a small heeling bucket beneath the compass.
