How Ships Fix a Misleading Compass
Because the ship’s permanent magnetic field remains relatively constant, it can be corrected with permanent magnets placed inside the binnacle. Fore-and-aft correctors are adjusted to remove deviation on east and west headings.
Athwartship correctors work in the same way for errors most noticeable on north and south headings. Their position can be moved closer to or farther from the compass to fine-tune their strength.
