From a Small Leak to a Dead Ship
Rope guards and net cutters protect the stern-tube opening, but fishing line can still find its way into the aft seals. The rotating shaft winds it into a tight ring, generating friction that destroys the seal lips.
A leak can first send oil into the sea, then allow seawater into the oil system. Once contaminated oil loses its film strength, the bearing can fail and the crew may have to shut down the main engine.
