Why Ships Heel During Turns and Wind
Heel looks like list, but it is temporary. Wind, waves, a turn, or lifting a heavy load can push a ship to one side; once that external force stops, the ship returns upright by itself.
Heel becomes dangerous only when the heeling force exceeds the vessel’s stability limits. Under normal operating conditions, it is simply part of how ships move through water.
