Why a Steel Ship Can Confuse Its Own Compass
A steel hull sits inside Earth’s magnetic field, so the iron within it becomes magnetised. That extra magnetic influence can pull a compass away from the direction it should be showing.
Soft iron changes its magnetism easily as a vessel moves through Earth’s field. Hard iron behaves more like a permanent magnet, retaining its magnetism after heat or shock from work such as welding and hammering.
